The rediscovery of colour in medieval monuments during the nineteenth century

Preface

The book is the result of an international cooperation between Universities; more precisely, this work was premiered in four lectures held in May 2016 at the Ph.D. in Architecture and Construction (Draco) in Sapienza University. The lectures were organized in the context of a General Agreement signed between the School of Architecture of Tianjin University in China and the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. The author of this book is in charge for the agreement for the Chinese Institution, while the author of the brief preface is in charge for the Italian one.

A decade of designing hypothesis for Rome: 1980-1990. Themes and methods.

The study I propose concerns some projects developed but not builded in Rome between 1980 and
1990.
These projects allow us to develop a reflection on themes and methods used in contemporary design
in the historical center. In them the functional distinction and design definition of the architects
may identify some ways of architectural design in a stratified context such as the historical center of
Rome.
This projects are the one for archaeological site of the Imperial Forums designed by Leonardo Benevolo

Aldo Van Eych di Robert Mc Carter

The reviews of Robert McCarter's book on Aldo van Each focus on the close relationship between van Eych's biographical event, the development of an idea and the projects.
It's the first monograph on Aldo Van Eyck published after his death; it is based on the materials of Van Eyck’s archive and on conversations with Herman Hertzberger and with Francis Strauven. It is illustrated with three hundred images, including drawings and photographs, many of which had never been published.

Luca Reale and Josep-Maria Garcia-Fuentes on ‘Gio Ponti. Loving Architecture’ at the MAXXI

‘Gio Ponti. Loving Architecture’ exhibition, running from 27 November 2019 until 13 April 2020 at MAXXI in Rome, has the merit to ‘give us back’ Gio Ponti as an architect, in place of Gio Ponti as designer and artist, in his dimension as a practicing architect but also in all his intellectual depth.

Archaeological Landscapes and Drawings

Learning from the ruins of the archaeological landscapes through the architectural drawing is an essential lesson to understand the value of the historical structures and compare them with the contemporary city. Archaeological landscapes are a complex and dense heritage to be enhanced; they are a precious resource for architectural design in its dialogue with the ancient.

Prison Architecture as a Field of Study: A Multidisciplinary Contribution

The chapter discusses how the he book draws together a collage of independent multidisciplinary contributions discussing places and spaces where punishment takes place. It is important to emphasize that the contributors themselves have chosen the topics and studies they present. The chapters stand alone and do not represent conditions in Norway or Italy. The texts are written by researchers and architects who work within different disciplinary traditions, practice fields and within various methodological traditions.

Prison, Architecture and Humans

What is prison architecture and how can it be studied? How are concepts such as humanism, dignity and solidarity translated into prison architecture? What kind of ideologies and ideas are expressed in various prison buildings from different eras and locations? What is the outside and the inside of a prison, and what is the significance of movement within the prison space? What does a lunch table have to do with prison architecture? How do prisoners experience materiality in serving a prison sentence? These questions are central to the texts presented in this anthology.
