The reciprocal interplay between the circadian clock machinery and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis has been largely demonstrated: the circadian clock may control the physiological circadian endogenous glucocorticoid (GC) secretion and action; GCs, in turn, are potent regulators of the circadian clock and their inappropriate replacement has been associated with metabolic and immune impairment.

Circadian rhythms and neuro-immuno-endocrinology

Rhythm rules everything in our lives, and we believe that circadian biology can offer a key to understanding the unexplained or puzzling evidence in the complexity of endocrine feedback loops. The metabolic consequences of the disruption of clock genes are well-known. We are now adding a further level of complexity, showing how circadian rhythms of the immune system are tightly linked to the endocrine rhythms, especially that of glucocorticoids. The big picture we are in now is that of "neuro-immuno-endocrinology." We love it!

PURPOSE:
The aim of this research was to assess the prevalence of Night Eating Syndrome (NES) in a university student population and to clear up the relationship between NES, depression and chronotype. The relation between NES and seasonality was also investigated.

Fixing the broken clock in adrenal disorders: focus on glucocorticoids and chronotherapy

The circadian rhythm derives from the integration of many signals that shape the expression of clock-related genes in a 24-hour cycle. Biological tasks, including cell proliferation, differentiation, energy storage and immune regulation, are preferentially confined to specific periods. A gating system, supervised by the central and peripheral clocks, coordinates the endogenous and exogenous signals and prepares for transition to activities confined to periods of light or darkness. The fluctuations of cortisol and its receptor are crucial in modulating these signals.
