International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology (IFCN) – EEG research workgroup: Recommendations on frequency and topographic analysis of resting state EEG rhythms. Part 1: Applications in clinical research studies

In 1999, the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology (IFCN) published “IFCN Guidelines for topographic and frequency analysis of EEGs and EPs” (Nuwer et al., 1999).

Interplay between COVID-19, pollution, and weather features on changes in the incidence of acute coronary syndromes in early 2020

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused an unprecedented change in the apparent epidemiology of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). However, the interplay between this disease, changes in pollution, climate, and aversion to activation of emergency medical services represents a challenging conundrum. We aimed at appraising the impact of COVID-19, weather, and environment features on the occurrence of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) in a large Italian region and metropolitan area.

Integrated multi-criteria assessments in support of the verifying the feasibility of recovering archaeological sites: The case of portus-ostia antica

The transformation of “complex” sites subject to landscape and/or archaeological and/or environmental protection is itself a complex operation that, right from the preliminary meta-design phases, requires the support of “assessment science” to comprehend its effects – economic and otherwise. Consequently, for the decision-making process to be effective and efficient, assessment tools and methodologies suited to the specific situations being assessed should be identified.

Carbon Footprint: calculation methodology applied to a territory

Air Pollution and Migration in Italy: An Empirical Investigation at Provincial Level

Human mobility in relation to climate change and environmental degradation has been gaining
increasing prominence in public and policy debates. Though many factors can come into play on
mobility decisions, it is suggested that the increased concerns with environmental risks may be
influential in shaping internal and external migration patterns

Advances in Theoretical and Computational Energy Optimization Processes

Industry, construction and transport are the three sectors that traditionally lead to the highest energy requirements. This is why, over the past few years, all the involved stakeholders have widely expressed the necessity to introduce a new approach to the analysis and management of those energy processes characterizing the aforementioned sectors. The objective is to guide production and energy processes to an approach aimed at energy savings and a decrease in environmental impact.

Enhancing the urban quality of life: A case study of a coastal city in the metropolitan area of Rome

The present paper concerns an environmentally sustainable neighborhood planning project, as part of the smart community, located in the municipality of Ladispoli, in the Metropolitan area of Rome, along the Tyrrhenian coast. The project was designed as a solution to two current issues, involving all the major urban areas of the Northern Hemisphere: the ageing population and the young New Immigrants Citizens integration; the purpose is, therefore, to create an intergenerational space of mutual support and exchange among the local residents.

Fluoxetine effects on molecular, cellular and behavioral endophenotypes of depression are driven by the living environment

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) represent the most common treatment for major depression. However, their efficacy is variable and incomplete. In order to elucidate the cause of such incomplete efficacy, we explored the hypothesis positing that SSRIs may not affect mood per se but, by enhancing neural plasticity, render the individual more susceptible to the influence of the environment. Consequently, SSRI administration in a favorable environment promotes a reduction of symptoms, whereas in a stressful environment leads to a worse prognosis.

Environmental stimuli shape microglial plasticity in glioma

In glioma, microglia and infiltrating macrophages are exposed to factors that force them to produce cytokines and chemokines, contributing to tumor growth and maintaining a pro-tumorigenic, immunosuppressed microenvironment. We demonstrate that housing glioma-bearing mice in enriched environment (EE) reverts the immunosuppressive phenotype of infiltrating myeloid cells, by modulating inflammatory gene expression. Under these conditions, branching and patrolling activity of myeloid cells is increased, and their phagocytic activity is promoted.
