Preliminary sensitivity analysis for an ex-vessel LOCA without plasma shutdown for the EU DEMO WCLL blanket concept

In this early development phase of the DEMO design the uncertainty affecting many operational and design parameters can modify main outcomes of accident scenario aiming at studying the critical conditions for the vacuum vessel and the contiguous containment volumes. The aim of this paper is to perform a preliminary sensitivity analysis of an accident progression predicted by MELCOR code considering selected parameters as a figure of merit to predict possible code outcomes.

Preliminary safety analysis of an in-vessel LOCA for the EU-DEMO WCLL blanket concept

In-vessel Loss Of Coolant Accident (LOCA) is one of the Design Basis Accident to be considered to support the future DEMOnstration power plant safety assessment. The water-cooled lithium-lead (WCLL) Breeding Blanket (BB) concept relies on Lithium-Lead as breeder, neutron multiplier and tritium carrier. The breeding modules are cooled by two independent pressurized water systems: the fist-wall (FW) and the breeding zone (BZ) coolant systems. The postulated initiating event (PIE) considered for this safety analysis is a double-ended pipe rupture of the blanket module first wall channels.

Smart tunnel and dynamic risk analysis

The paper proposes an innovative system of supervision and data acquisition, oriented to fire safety through a dynamic risk analysis, called SCADRA (Supervisory Control and Dynamic Risk Analysis). SCADRA achieves operation and management benefits for safety, functionality and energy optimization, by means of dynamic control and monitoring measures. A 'Smart Tunnel' can be defined as a model where technical systems are designed and installed in an advanced way, by using digital components and sensors.

Low-cost, high-resolution, fault-robust position and speed estimation for PMSM drives operating in safety-critical systems

In this paper it is shown how to obtain a low-cost, high-resolution and fault-robust position sensing system for permanent magnet synchronous motor drives operating in safety-critical systems, by combining high-frequency signal injection with binary Hall-effect sensors. It is shown that the position error signal obtained via high-frequency signal injection can be merged easily into the quantization-harmonic-decoupling vector tracking observer used to process the Hall-effect sensor signals.

GEN-IV LFR development: Status & perspectives

Since Lead-cooled Fast Reactors (LFR) have been conceptualized in the frame of Generation IV International Forum (GIF), great interest has focused on the development and testing of new technologies related to Heavy Liquid Metal (HLM) nuclear reactors. In this frame, ENEA developed one of the larger European experimental fleet of experimental facilities aiming at investigating HLM thermal-hydraulics, coolant chemistry control, corrosion behavior for structural materials, and at developing components, instrumentations and innovative systems, supported by experiments and numerical tools.

Characterization of leak detection in HLM system using LIFUS5/MOD3 facility

In the framework of EU MAXSIMA project, the safety of the Steam Generator (SG) adopted in the primary loop of the Heavy Liquid Metal Fast Reactors (HLMFR) has been treated by looking at consequences and damage propagation of a SG Tube Rupture event (SGTR) and by characterizing leak rates from typical cracks. Indeed, instrumentation able to promptly detect the presence of a crack in the steam generator tubes may be used to prevent its further propagation which would possibly lead to a full rupture of the tube.

On electrical safety in academic laboratories

Academic laboratories should be a safe environment in which one can teach, learn, and conduct research. Sharing a common principle, the prevention of potential accidents and imminent injuries is a fundamental goal in the laboratory environments. In addition, academic laboratories are attributed exceptional responsibility to instill in students the culture of the safety, the basis of risk assessment, and of the exemplification of the prudent practices around energized objects.

Label-free shotgun proteomics approach to characterize muscle tissue from farmed and wild european sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)

Sea bass represents one of the main fish products in the market. Most of it comes from farming and is bred in different conditons with respect to the wild fish. Differences may thus be expected. In this study, a proteomic profile of farmed and wild sea bass samples was performed, employing a fractionation strategy where peptide samples were first separated by 2D chromatography. The peptides were finally analyzed by shotgun proteomics workflow combined to tandem MS.
