I bronzi votivi dal santuario di Ercole ad Alba Fucens

Between 2006 and 2009 the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici dell’Abruzzo carried out a series
of new archaeological excavations in the ancient city of Alba Fucens. Research also extended to
the sanctuary of Hercules, and a great many small votive bronzes were found in the area. More than
60 items were recovered between complete and fragmentary examples,. This group of items comprised
about 50 representations of Hercules, 2 female/male offerors, 7 clubs, 1 bovine and a few other

Optical puff mediated laminar-turbulent polarization transition

Various physical structures exhibit a fundamentally probabilistic nature over
diverse scales in space and time, to the point that the demarcation line between quantum and
classic laws gets blurred. Here, we characterize the probability of intermittency in the
laminar-turbulence transition of a partially mode-locked fiber laser system, whose degree of
coherence is deteriorated by multiple mode mixing. Two competing processes, namely the
proliferation and the decay of an optical turbulent puff, determine a critical behavior for the

Nonlinear waves in multimode fibers

We overview recent advances in the field of nonlinear guided wave propagation in multimode fibers. It is only in recent years that the study of nonlinear optics in multimode fibers has experienced a revival of research interest. Nonlinear arrays of linearly coupled multicore fibers permit spatiotemporal reshaping and coherent combining of ultrashort optical pulses. Spatial-division multiplexing is an emerging technology for increasing the capacity of optical communication links, and the presence of nonlinear mode coupling requires a careful analysis.

Serum sclerostin and bone turnover in latent autoimmune diabetes in adults

Bone formation is impaired in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes (T2D) while sclerostin, an antagonist of bone formation, is increased in T2D only. No data are available on latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), an autoimmune type of diabetes that may clinically resemble T2D at diagnosis. We evaluated serum sclerostin and bone turnover markers in LADA compared with T2D, and whether sclerostin is affected by metabolic syndrome (MetS) in T2D or LADA.

Neuropilin 1mediates keratinocyte growth factor signaling in adipose-derived stem cells: potential involvement in adipogenesis

Adipogenesis is regulated by a complex network of molecules, including fibroblast growth factors. Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) has been previously reported to promote proliferation on rat preadipocytes, although the expression of its specific receptor, FGFR2-IIIb/KGFR, is not actually detected in mesenchymal cells. Here, we demonstrate that human adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) show increased expression of KGF during adipogenic differentiation, especially in the early steps. Moreover, KGF is able to induce transient activation of ERK and p38 MAPK pathways in these cells.
