A Puppet in the East: Translation and Reception of Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio from the Arab World to Far East Asia
This research examines the translation and reception of Collodi's "Pinocchio" across Middle Eastern and Far Eastern countries, mapping the book's remarkable but understudied diffusion in these regions, exemplified by fifteen Persian translations and over twenty Chinese and Japanese versions. The project systematically investigates translation activities in Arabic-speaking countries, Iran, India, China, Korea, and Japan, creating a comprehensive digital portal that catalogues translations, translator information, and publishing contexts within Sapienza's infrastructure. Employing an interdisciplinary methodology combining comparative literature, translation studies, and reception theory, the research aims to provide both diachronic and synchronic perspectives on Pinocchio's cultural fortune in Oriental contexts. The findings will be disseminated through an open-access portal, international conference presentations, and collective publications, establishing an innovative model for comparative intercultural investigation that highlights the unique dynamics and common patterns of this literary work's Asian reception.
