Cross-cultural differences in children’s conceptualizations of happiness at school

Children’s happiness at school has been mainly investigated from a quantitative perspective, largely overlooking what children understand by happiness and whether their conceptualizations are shaped by culture. Hence, in the present study, using a quantification of qualitative data, we investigated whether English (n = 421, M = 10.63 years, 223 girls) and Spanish (n = 223, M = 11.13 years, 112 girls) children reported different conceptualizations of happiness at school.

Global burden of headache disorders in children and adolescents 2007–2017

Headache disorders are prevalent and disabling conditions impacting on people of all ages, including children and adolescents with substantial impact on their school activities and leisure time. Our study aims to report specific information on headaches in children and adolescents based on the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, that provides estimates for incidence, prevalence, fatal and non-fatal outcomes. We relied on 2007 and 2017 GBD estimates for prevalence and Years Lived with Disability (YLDs) at the global level and in WHO regions.

Outcomes Following Pouch Formation in Paediatric Ulcerative Colitis: A Study From the Porto Group of ESPGHAN

INTRODUCTION: Contemporary pediatric data on pouch outcomes are sparse, especially in the era of laparoscopic surgeries. We aimed to assess outcomes and predictors in children with ulcerative colitis/inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-unclassified who underwent colectomy and ileal pouch-anal anastomosis. METHODS: This was a multicenter retrospective cohort study from 17 IBD centers affiliated with the pediatric IBD Porto group of ESPGHAN.

Magnetic-resonance-guided focused ultrasound treatment of non-spinal osteoid osteoma in children: multicentre experience

Background: Osteoid osteoma is a benign and painful musculoskeletal tumour that usually affects children. Current standard treatment is CT-guided radiofrequency ablation, a minimally invasive percutaneous procedure, with clinical success rates ranging between 85% and 98%. Though minimally invasive, however, this type of procedure is not free from complications.

The AIEOP 2nd series of children and adolescents intracranial ependymoma. An integrated molecular and clinical characterization with a long-term follow-up

BACKGROUND: A prospective 2002-2014 study stratified 160 patients by resection extent and histological grade, reporting results in 2016. We reanalyzed the series after a median 119 months, adding retrospectively patients’ molecular features.
METHODS: Follow-up of all patients was updated. DNA copy-number analysis and gene-fusion detection could be completed for 94/160 patients, methylation classification for 68.

Dental cone beam computed tomography in children: clinical effectiveness and cancer risk due to radiation exposure

Firstly used in the early 90s to generate 3-dimensional projections of X-ray images, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has resulted in a large application in dentomaxillofacial imaging, even in children. CBCT uses ionizing radiation that may cause damage to the DNA, and children are at the greatest carcinogenesis risk due to their higher tissue radiosensitivity and their longer life expectancy compared to adults.

Italian guidelines for the prevention and management of dental trauma in children

Dental trauma is a frequent occurrence in children and adolescent and a correct diagnosis and treatment are essential for a favourable long-term prognosis. The present Guidelines aim to formulate evidence-based recommendations to assist dentists, paediatricians, surgeons, teachers, school and sport staff, parents in the prevention and first aid of dental trauma in children and to provide a careful assessment of the medico-legal implications, reviewing the first draft of the guidelines published in 2012.

Treatments of sleep bruxism in children: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective: Treatment of sleep bruxism (SB) in children is not well established. The aim of this study was to develop evidence-based recommendations on SB therapy in children between the ages of 2 and 17. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted. Literature searches were performed using MedLine (PubMed), Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library (November 30 2017). Results: The search strategy identified 268 potential articles; 10 papers were included in the qualitative synthesis and 3 in the meta-analysis, for a total of 94 patients.

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws and dental surgery procedures in children and young people with osteogenesis imperfecta: a systematic review

Bisphosphonates (BPs) contrast the bone fragility and improve bone density in some metastatic cancers and bone diseases, such as Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI). BPs use has been associated with osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJs) in adults needing for invasive dental procedures.
AIM:
To conduct a systematic review on BRONJ occurrence after dental surgery in paediatric population under BPs therapy for OI, so as to identify the pre-surgical protocols adopted.
