Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the medical activities of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene, Vatican City State

Objectives: To report the changes in volume and characteristics of medical activities in the Vatican City State during COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: Data for general medical service, specialty consultations, radiology exams and diagnostic procedures delivered by the Directorate of Health and Hygiene of the State were retrospectively analyzed. Analysis focused on year 2020 and on the lockdown period March 9 – May 18.

The Vatican City State Internal Healthcare System Response to COVID-19 Pandemic: Prevention and Control Strategies

Similar to other countries, also the internal healthcare system of the Vatican City State has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the experience accumulated so far, the ongoing prevention measures, the organizational efforts to avoid discontinuation of healthcare assistance, and the efforts to precociously identify new cases have contributed to minimize the impact of the pandemic on the State and will be of utmost importance in the coming months, along with a widespread vaccination campaign.

Asymptomatic patients as a source of transmission of COVID-19 in homeless shelters

Objectives: Asymptomatic carriers account for over a third of all Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) cases and are characterized by the absence of symptoms but the same infectivity as symptomatic infections. The high percentage of asymptomatic COVID-19 patients is significant in settings with specific vulnerabilities, such as homeless shelters, where the consequences of an outbreak may be dramatic.

Vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 infection in early pregnancy: what is the evidence?

It is today well-established that the early stages of pregnancy represent a particularly vulnerable period for the embryo and that viral infections during this period can potentially affect embryogenesis and fetal organ development. Viruses can gain access to the decidua and later to the placenta, by ascending from the lower reproductive tract, or via hematogenous transmission. Vertical transmission mechanisms are poorly understood.

Visceral adipose tissue area predicts intensive care unit admission in COVID-19 patients

We retrospectively investigated, in 62 consecutive hospitalised COVID-19 patients (aged 70 ± 14 years, 40 males), the prognostic value of CT-derived subcutaneous adipose tissue and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) metrics, testing them in four predictive models for admission to intensive care unit (ICU), with and without pre-existing comorbidities. Multivariate logistic regression identified VAT score as the best ICU admission predictor (odds ratios 4.307-12.842).

Role of computed tomography in predicting critical disease in patients with covid-19 pneumonia: a retrospective study using a semiautomatic quantitative method

Background: So far, only a few studies evaluated the correlation between CT features and clinical outcome in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. Purpose: To evaluate CT ability in differentiating critically ill patients requiring invasive ventilation from patients with less severe disease. Methods: We retrospectively collected data from patients admitted to our institution for COVID-19 pneumonia between March 5th-24th. Patients were considered critically ill or non-critically ill, depending on the need for mechanical ventilation.
