Characterizing the heterogeneity of European higher education institutions combining cluster and efficiency analyses

The heterogeneity of the Higher Education (HE) Institutions is one of the main critical issues to address properly the assessment of systemic performance. We adopt a multi-level perspective by combining national (macro) and institution (micro) level data and analyses. We combine clustering and efficiency analysis to characterize the heterogeneity of HE systems (at the national level) exploiting micro level data. We show also the potential of using micro level data to characterize national level performance.

Fostering commonfare. Entanglements between participatory design and feminism

This paper addresses the role of critical theories to knowledge-making and world- making practices in design research. We discuss the agential and performative power of feminist technoscience sensibilities in shaping a European participatory design project – called Commonfare – which aims to confront the risk of social exclusion as a result of precariousness, low income, unemployment, which is increasingly affecting the European population.

Co-designing for common values: creating hybrid spaces to nurture autonomous cooperation

The paper concerns the development of digitally-mediated technologies that value social cooperation as a common good rather than as a source of revenue and accumulation. The paper discusses the activities that shaped a European participatory design project which aims to develop a digital space that promotes and facilitates the ‘Commonfare’, a complementary approach to social welfare.

The relationship between economic performance and the rise of ‘Unholy Alliances’ in the European Union

This article investigates the phenomenon of ‘unholy alliances’: grand coalitions and ideologically-incoherent coalitions in the EU. In the last decade, these types of government majorities have proliferated, even in countries that have not previously experienced them. This substantial increase happened during the years of the so-called Great Recession, together with the electoral growth of populist movements and new political parties. This article investigates the potential correlation between these ‘unholy alliances’ and the economic situation of countries.

Europe in the age of sad narratives. Terrorism, media representations and fear in Italy and beyond

What has been said so far allows us to advance some proposals for; solutions to improve the relationship between media and communication; the need for a trans-disciplinary dialogue in relation to terrorism on a global level. The solutions proposed focus on four main points: Communication and its industrial and propagandistic power, also considering its ability to foster symbolic violence (Galtung, 1968; Bourdieu e Passeron, 1970; Gallino 2004; Boltanski, 2000).

Molecular identity of Nemoura lacustris (Plecoptera: Nemouridae) throughout its distributional range

The recent report of Nemoura lacustris Pictet, 1865 in Great Britain has raised doubts on its identity, given the isolation with respect to the Mediterranean and continental populations of this species. Using molecular analyses, we tested if populations from the United Kingdom and the Iberian Peninsula were conspecific and tested the hypotheses of a recent colonization event versus a more ancient origin for the British populations. Phylogenetic analysis of the mitochondrial marker COI allowed us to conclude that the United Kingdom specimens morphologically ascribed to N.

Treatment of alcohol dependence. Alcohol and homelessness: social point of view

The phenomenon of homeless people is eliciting a devastating social impact with an estimated prevalence in the USA and in Europe between 5.6% and 13.9%. These persons have a poor quality of life, a limited or no social life. They are often unemployed or work only occasionally. They are at risk for problems with the law and often suffering from addiction to other drugs, psychiatric and other medical diseases. Alcohol is often not the cause of their social status, but only the result of other discomforts thus contributing to their bio-psycho-social degradation.

Minoranze e diritti linguistici in Italia e in Europa: tra teoria, storia, attualità

By providing theoretical, juridical and geolinguistic evidence, the article accounts for the constitutive plurilingual reality of Italy and Europe, and the long difficult journey of linguistic rights: from the historical origin of a strenuous resistance to their effective enforcement. It also indicates an effective path for language education policy geared towards multilingualism and respect for linguistic diversity, capable of bringing together old and new minorities.

Safety of primary anastomosis following emergency left sided colorectal resection: an international, multi-centre prospective audit

Introduction: Some evidence suggests that primary anastomosis following left sided colorectal resection in the emergency setting may be safe in selected patients, and confer favourable outcomes to permanent enterostomy. The aim of this study was to compare the major postoperative complication rate in patients undergoing end stoma vs primary anastomosis following emergency left sided colorectal resection. Methods: A pre-planned analysis of the European Society of Coloproctology 2017 audit.
