Although being largely implemented, participatory processes are still absent in many territories, even if they don’t lack of associative forms and collective aims. An emblematic case is represented by the Aniene Valley, a mountain area crossed by the homonymous river and situated on the eastern edge of the Metropolitan City of Rome, at the border with Abruzzo. This area, which is considered among the most marginal of the Latium region, has undergone deep social and economic changes over the last few decades, also due to the relative ease of access to the capital.

This article introduces the contributions collected in the special issue no. 2/2018 of “geotema” and presented at the 4th Study Day on Territorial Identities (Rome, September 22th, 2017), promoted by the homonymous research group of the A.Ge.I. (Associations of Italian Geographers).

Learning as a student-centred process is a consolidated concept in contemporary literature. To this concept is associated the scientific debate about the redefinition of the role of university professors in terms of enlargement of their functions and skills to plan and manage the training process. The consequent changes are not only connected to the curricular level but involve the communicative sphere of the professor-student relationship, which is increasingly central to promote the effectiveness of the educational project.

In a growing number of small and large cities across Europe, citizens are engaging and mobilizing to demonstrate their ability in creating innovative solutions for important social and spatial challenges. We are witnessing a different set of micro-practices that are transforming cities ‘from below’, thus questioning not only the relation between active citizenship and the State (Uitermark, 2015) but also forms of urban activation themselves.

L’azione pubblica, intesa non solo come governo da parte dell’amministrazione pubblica ma come complessiva azione dei differenti soggetti nel campo pubblico e in grado di orientare la trasformazione della città, ha assunto nel tempo a Roma caratteri peculiari. Da una parte, un governo pubblico che si è mostrato inadeguato e che non è stato in grado di rispondere ai problemi della città, entrando spesso in una dinamica collusiva con gli interessi forti e di mercato e lasciando quindi spazio ad azioni speculative.

The contribution aims to resume and discuss the theme of self-organization and re-appropriation of places, which is taken up in the French pavilion at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition, curated by Encore Heureux (Nicolas Delon, Julien Choppin and Sébastien Heymard) and dedicated to "Lieux Infinis / Infinite Places". Through a very attractive and engaging set-up and above all through the (often evocative) words of the direct protagonists, the theme is developed with reference to ten main case studies.

Le città sono attraversate da pratiche e processi di appropriazione e riappropriazione, da forme diffuse di autorganizzazione, da attività e iniziative autogestite, da nuove pratiche di convivenza, da movimenti urbani che cercano di praticare una diversa idea di città. Si tratta di un vasto fermento che interessa, anche se in modi molto diversificati, tutte le città del mondo.

Il termine “rigenerazione urbana”, già concetto originariamente abbastanza ambiguo, è diventato per molti versi - nell’uso comune e diffuso - uno slogan. D’altra parte molti territori esprimono capacità progettuali e di organizzazione, in grado di sviluppare politiche di “rigenerazione” e iniziative di qualità e complessità molto rilevanti.
