MONDO: A neutron tracker for particle therapy secondary emission measurements

In Particle Therapy, cancer treatments are performed using accelerated charged particles whose high irradiation precision and conformity permit to destroy the tumour while sparing the surrounding healthy tissues. Several secondary particles are produced during the treatments mainly photons, protons and neutrons. The reduced attenuation length of neutrons yields a secondary particle sample that is larger in number when compared to photons and charged particles.

Primary end point was to assess diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting peritoneal metastases (PM). Secondary end points were determining the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of CT in detecting PM according to the peritoneal cancer index (PCI), investigating correlations between radiological and surgical PCI, and comparing diagnostic yield of CT versus positron emission tomography (PET)/CT.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) has excessive anxiety and uncontrollable worry as core symptoms. Abnormal cerebral functioning underpins the expression and perhaps pathogenesis of GAD: Studies implicate impaired communication between the amygdala and the pre-frontal cortex (PFC). Our aim was to longitudinally investigate whether such network abnormalities are spatially restricted to this circuit or if the integrity of functional brain networks is globally disrupted in GAD.

Egomotion-related visual areas respond to active leg movements

Monkey neurophysiology and human neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that passive viewing of optic flow stimuli activates a cortical network of temporal, parietal, insular, and cingulate visual motion regions. Here, we tested whether the human visual motion areas involved in processing optic flow signals simulating self-motion are also activated by active lower limb movements, and hence are likely involved in guiding human locomotion. To this aim, we used a combined approach of task-evoked activity and resting-state functional connectivity by fMRI.

Moral sense is defined as a feeling of the rightness or wrongness of an action that knowingly causes harm to people other than the agent. The large amount of data collected over the past decade allows drawing some definite conclusions about the neurobiological foundations of moral reasoning as well as a systematic investigation of methodological variables during fMRI studies. Here, we verified the existence of converging and consistent evidence in the current literature by means of a meta-analysis of fMRI studies of moral reasoning, using activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Brain activity induced by implicit processing of others' pain and pleasure

Studies indicate that both explicit and implicit processing of affectively charged stimuli may be reflected in specific behavioural markers and physiological signatures. Here, we investigated whether the pleasantness ratings of a neutral target were affected by the subliminal perception of a painful (a slap) or pleasant (a caress) touch delivered to others. In particular, we combined the continuous flash suppression technique with the affective misattribution procedure to explore subliminal processing of observed pain and pleasure in others.

Rucaparib. An emerging parp inhibitor for treatment of recurrent ovarian cancer

Recently, Poly-ADP-Ribose Polymerase (PARP) inhibitors are one of the most intensively studied group of antiblastic agents for the management of recurrent ovarian cancer. Among this family, Olaparib was the first to be approved by European Medicines Agency as maintenance therapy post-response to platinum-based chemotherapy for recurrent ovarian cancer in women with deleterious BRCA1/2 mutation. Following that, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Olaparib monotherapy as fourth or later line of treatment in advanced ovarian cancer with deleterious germ-line BRCA1/2 mutation.
