The epidemiology of malignant mesothelioma in women: Gender differences and modalities of asbestos exposure

Introduction The epidemiology of gender differences for mesothelioma incidence has been rarely discussed in national case lists. In Italy an epidemiological surveillance system (ReNaM) is working by the means of a national register. Methods Incident malignant mesothelioma (MM) cases in the period 1993 to 2012 were retrieved from ReNaM. Gender ratio by age class, period of diagnosis, diagnostic certainty, morphology and modalities of asbestos exposure has been analysed using exact tests for proportion.

Coming out to siblings and internalized sexual stigma. The moderating role of gender in a sample of italian participants

Previous research has shown that the act of disclosing sexual orientation, known as coming out (CO), yields various benefits for gay and lesbian (GL) persons. Moreover, some researchers have found that CO is negatively related to internalized sexual stigma (ISS). However, most research has focused on CO to parents and a few studies have examined CO to siblings. The aim of this research is to deepen the understanding of the role of CO to siblings in protecting GL persons' wellbeing.

Verbal, physical, and relational peer victimization: The role of immigrant status and gender

BACKGROUND: Most studies suggest that immigrant youth are more likely to be victimized than their non-immigrant counterparts. In Italy, a country in which the number of foreign migrants has grown exponentially over recent decades, this line of research is particularly interesting. Thus, the main objective of the present study was to examine the relationship between peer victimization, gender, and immigrant status in a large sample of students.

Students’ psychological well-being and its multilevel relationship with immigrant background, gender, socioeconomic status, achievement, and class size

School situations trigger affective states that influence students’ achievement and well-being. In the present study, we investigated, on the basis of a sample of 26,470 high-school students and 1,472 classrooms, the relationship of individual characteristics (immigrant background, gender, socioeconomic status, and achievement) as well as classroom characteristics (group composition and size) with students’ feelings at school.

Gender effect on cardiac involvement in myotonic dystrophy type 1

Background and purpose: Cardiac involvement is observed in about 80% of subjects with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) and is mainly characterized by cardiac conduction and/or rhythm abnormalities (CCRAs), possibly leading to sudden cardiac death (SCD). Our objective was to investigate whether the gender difference may influence the cardiac involvement and SCD in DM1. Methods: We analyzed prevalence and incidence of cardiological abnormalities in males versus females in 151 consecutive DM1 patients over a 35-year follow-up period.

Public policies towards the family in Italy: an analysis of the evolution of the Italian welfare state and its impact on gender and generations

Italy is part of Mediterranean Model of Welfare as defined by Ferrera in 1996. Since the '80s a significant sociological and political science literature has shown comparative abnormalities in the Italian welfare as part of the more general weaknesses of the political, economic and social system. Over the past three decades, the intensity and the type of social needs were deeply modified in Italy as a consequence of demographic, social and economic changes.

Introduction: Age, gender and social trajectories: the uneven emancipation of women in mediterranean societies

At the start of the third millennium, the path towards gender equality more uncertain than ever. Changes in behaviours in the areas of private and public life reveal the permanence of a structural principle of masculine domination. While the behaviours and trajectories of men and women have relatively converged in recent years, they have not fundamentally challenged the social division of gender roles. To understand this evolution in gender relations, one has to examine the content and effects of the changes that have occurred, and assess their scope.

Age, gender and drug therapy influences on Tpeak-tend interval and on electrical risk score

Background and objectives: Electrical risk score (ERS) has been proposed as easy, inexpensive test to stratify of
sudden cardiac death (SCD) risk in subjects with normal left ventricular function. Potentially, aging, gender
and drugs can influence ERS affecting two on six electrical markers, particularly, those based on the repolarization.
Aim of this study was to establish aging, gender and drug therapy possible influences on ERS and mortality
in elderly patients.

Machine-learning analysis of voice samples recorded through smartphones: the combined effect of ageing and gender

Background: Experimental studies using qualitative or quantitative analysis have demonstrated that the human voice progressively worsens with ageing. These studies, however, have mostly focused on specific voice features without examining their dynamic interaction. To examine the complexity of age-related changes in voice, more advanced techniques based on machine learning have been recently applied to voice recordings but only in a laboratory setting. We here recorded voice samples in a large sample of healthy subjects.
