This public report provides an overview of the issues and challenges related to the management of heritage buildings and sites (HBs/sites) within their surroundings. Using nine representative European HB/sites, a multidisciplinary team consisting of conservation professionals, art historians. archaeologists, architects. biologists. civil engineers and information technology experts bring their expertise and experience to understand the risks to which HBs/sites are exposed. and the traditional and new approaches that can be used to mitigate them. While attempting to cover the diversity of issues raised, this report is deliberately concise. Further reading however is provided throughout the document. This report is one of the deliverables of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology Action TD 1406 - i2MHB (Innovation in Intelligent Management of Heritage Buildings). The objective of this Action is to establish an open pan-European network to promote synergies between heritage scientists, industry, research and education stakeholders and the public, in order to achieve a collective understanding of the range of interventions that are suitable for managing heritage buildings within their environments
