Propensity-score-adjusted comparison of evolut vs. Portico devices for transcatheter aortic valve implantation

Aims Transcatheter aortic valve implantation has become an established treatment for severe aortic stenosis, thanks to key improvements achieved by new-generation devices. Their comparative effectiveness and safety are, however, still uncertain. Methods We queried a prospective registry on transcatheter aortic valve implantation to compare Evolut and Portico devices, focusing on procedural, in-hospital, and mid-term outcomes. Unadjusted and propensity-adjusted analyses were carried out. Results In all, 233 patients were included, 119 (51.1%) receiving Evolut and 114 (48.9%) Portico.

Risk of cardiac and sudden death with and without revascularisation of a coronary chronic total occlusion

Objective The aim of this study is to evaluate the long-Term risk of cardiac death and sudden cardiac death (SCD) and/or sustained ventricular arrhythmias (SVAs) in patients with coronary chronic total occlusions (CTO) revascularised versus those with CTO not revascularised by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods From a cohort of 1357 CTO-PCI patients, 1162 patients who underwent CTO PCI attempt were included in this long-Term analysis: 837 patients were revascularised by PCI (CTO-R group) and 325 were not revascularised (CTO-NR group).

Oil distribution in outcropping carbonate-ramp reservoirs (Maiella Mountain, Central Italy). Three-dimensional models constrained by dense historical well data and laboratory measurements

Heavy oil and bitumens have been exploited in Italy during the past, in particular over the Maiella Mountain’s northwest flank (Central Italy), where relatively undeformed, hydrocarbon-bearing carbonate- ramp reservoirs of the Bolognano Formation crop out. These res- ervoirs represent the exhumed analog of a wider petroleum system that has been investigated also in the subsurface by exploration activities, both onshore and offshore (Central Adriatic).

Facies heterogeneities and 3D porosity modelling in an Oligocene (Upper Chattian) carbonate ramp, Salento Peninsula, Southern Italy

Appraisal of the volumes of fluid in a carbonate reservoir will typically require a reliable predictive model. This can be achieved by combining studies of well-exposed carbonate successions with 3D models in order to obtain reliable quantitative data. In this paper, we present a detailed outcrop study and a 3D porosity model of a well-exposed Oligocene carbonate ramp (Salento Peninsula, southern Italy) to investigate the nature of small-scale facies and porosity heterogeneities.

Impact of landslides on transportation routes during the 2016–2017 Central Italy seismic sequence

Hundreds of landslides were triggered by the mainshocks (up to Mw 6.5) that occurred in 2016 in Central Italy during the seismic sequence that originated in the Apennine and ended in January 2017. These landslides were studied via field-based investigation and remote sensing techniques during the weeks immediately after the mainshocks occurred. EarthQuake-triggered Landslides (EQtLs) mostly consisted of rockfalls and rockslides.

Isselite, Cu6(SO4)(OH)10(H2O)4·h2O, a new mineral species from Eastern Liguria, Italy

The new mineral isselite, Cu6(SO4)(OH)10(H2O)4·H2O, has been discovered in the Lagoscuro mine, Monte Ramazzo mining complex, Genoa, Eastern Liguria, Italy. It occurs as sprays of blue acicular crystals, up to 0.1 mm long, associated with brochantite and posnjakite. Streak is light blue and the lustre is vitreous. Isselite is brittle, with irregular fracture and good cleavage on {001} and {100}. Measured density is 3.00(2) g/cm3. Isselite is optically biaxial (-), with α = 1.599(2), β = 1.633(2) and γ = 1.647(2) (determined in white light). The measured 2V is 63.6(5)°.

Rüdlingerite, mn2+2v5+as5+o7·2h2o, a new species isostructural with fianelite

The new mineral species rüdlingerite, ideally Mn2+2V5+As5+O7·2H2O, occurs in the Fianel mine, in Val Ferrera, Grisons, Switzerland, a small Alpine metamorphic Mn deposit. It is associated with ansermetite and Fe oxyhydroxide in thin fractures in Triassic dolomitic marbles. Rüdlingerite was also found in specimens recovered from the dump of the Valletta mine, Canosio, Cuneo, Piedmont, Italy, where it occurs together with massive braccoite and several other As- and V-rich phases in richly mineralized veins crossing the quartz-hematite ore.

Superinfections in patients treated with Teicoplanin as anti-SARS-CoV-2 agent

We read with interest the paper by Giacobbe et al. estimating a cumulative risk of developing at least one bloodstream infection (BSI) episode (largely due to Gram‐positive pathogens) of almost 50% after 30 days at risk in severe COVID‐19 patients. (2) Similarly, Somers et al. reported an increased risk to develop bacterial superinfections, principally represented by Staphylococcus aureus ventilatory associated pneumonia (VAP), in critically ill patients infected with SARS‐CoV‐2 and treated with Tocilizumab.

Contact With Gay Men and Lesbian Women Moderates the Negative Relationship Between Religiosity and Endorsement of Same-Sex Unions’ and Families’ Rights

This study investigated the moderation effect of contact with gay men and lesbian women on the relationship between religiosity levels with the endorsement of same-sex unions’ and families’ rights. Analyses were carried out on a national representative cross-sectional sample of 5,544 Italian adult residents (% females = 54).
