Indeterminate thyroid nodules (TIR3A/TIR3B) according to the new Italian Reporting System for Thyroid Cytology: a cytomorphological study

OBJECTIVE:
The Italian reporting system for thyroid cytology classifies indeterminate lesions as TIR3A (low-risk) or TIR3B (high-risk) and is meant to provide practical guidance rather than a detailed consideration of morphological features. We aimed to assess which cytological features have the most diagnostic value and whether they are effective in classifying nodules as either TIR3A or TIR3B and in predicting histological outcomes.

Letter concerning: 'Response to:' the epidemiology of malignant mesothelioma in women: Gender differences and modalities of asbestos exposure' by Marinaccio et al '

Finkelstein invited physicians and researchers interested in mesothelioma to investigate on past usage of talcum powders by affected people. In Italy,
asbestos contamination in talc for indus trial use has been documented, and, as he underlines tremolite contamination at low levels of cosmetic and pharmaceutical talc has been reported in USA by Blount and Gordon and colleagues.
In the Italian National Mesothelioma Register (ReNaM), the analysis of intensive exposure to talc has been evaluated with respect to occupational and environmental history.

APPEARANCE AND FUNCTION OF HARPOONS IN NORTHEASTERN ITALY

The chapter discusses the appearance of osseous harpoons in northern Italy. At present, in Italy, the earliest harpoons come from the eastern Alpine region and in particular from the Adige Valley, the southern Dolomites and the Julian Alps. Typologically, specimens from these areas are defined as bilateral harpoons with straight barbs and basal bilateral gorge and bevelled bases.

Climate changes and ST-elevation myocardial infarction treated with primary percutaneous coronary angioplasty

Background: The impact of seasonal changes on the incidence of acute myocardial infarction has been incompletely appraised, especially in the modern era of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). We aimed to appraise the overall and season-specific impact of climate changes on the daily rate of PCCI. Methods: Details on PPCI and climate changes were retrospectively collected in three high-volume Italian institutions with different geographical features.

Comparison of Outcomes of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation in Patients ≥85 Years Versus Those <85 Years

The differential outcomes across the age spectrum of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) recipients are still debated. Aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of oldest-old patients undergoing TAVI in the large “Registro Italiano GISE sull'impianto di Valvola Aortica Percutanea (RISPEVA)” registry. A total of 3,507 patients were stratified according to age: 1,381 were ≥85 years, 2,126 were <85 years. Primary endpoints were death at 30-days and complete follow-up (FU) (medium 368 days).

Excess all-cause mortality during COVID-19 outbreak: potential role of untreated cardiovascular disease

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has rapidly spread globally. Due to different testing strategies, under-detection of positive subjects and COVID-19-related-deaths remains common. Aim of this analysis was to assess the real impact of COVID-19 through the analysis of 2020 Italian all-cause mortality data compared to historical series.
