MEXICO AND ITALY: FERTILITY INTENTIONS IN SETTINGS AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF THE FERTILITY TRANSITION

In Western European societies below fertility replacement level has encouraged research on individual fertility intentions. However, how its role has changed throughout the different stages of the demographic transitions has been largely under-researched, partly due to the lack of adequate data. Italy and Mexico provide a good case for the study of fertility intentions, with Italy having completed the fertility transition and Mexico having geographical areas which are at different stages of the demographic transition.

Parent-child communication about sex and romantic feelings: does having older siblings make a difference?

Parental involvement in sex education and the quality of parent-child communication about romantic feelings appear to have a protective effect on adolescent sexual behaviours. However, little research has been conducted on the role played by birth order in the level of parental involvement in sex education. This is the first study seeking to address if the quality of parent-child communication about sex and romantic sentiments differs according to whether respondents have—or do not have—older siblings in Italy.

Mussolini and the Yugoslav Question during the First World War

The article presents Benito Mussolini’s view of the “Yugoslav Question”, i.e. the future delimitation of the eastern Adriatic coast between Italy and Yugoslavia during the First World War. The future fascist politician underwent a significant transformation during this period and so did his view of Italian-Yugoslav relations. Mussolini carefully manoeuvred between two “extreme” groups of Italian interventionists, one, the so-called rinunciatari, inclined to give significant concessions to Yugoslavia, and the other, demanding Italy’s complete control of the Adriatic.

Usefulness of bronchoalveolar lavage in suspect COVID-19 repeatedly negative swab test and interstitial lung disease

The diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) relies on nasopharyngeal swab, which shows a 20–30% risk of false negativity [1]. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is reported to be useful in patients with pulmonary interstitial infiltrates on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT). We investigated the usefulness of BAL in symptomatic patients with positive HRCT and a repeatedly negative swab test (‘grey zone’).

Impact of the different vehicle fleets on PM10 pollution. Comparison between the ten most populous Italian metropolitan cities for the year 2018

The main aim of this research effort is to assess the impact of the different circulating vehicle fleets on PM10 pollution, comparing the results from the ten most populated metropolitan cities in Italy. Circulating diesel vehicles have been categorized in different groups depending on the vehicle type (car or Light Commercial Vehicle - LCV) and European emission standard. The annual mileage and the total PM10 emission for each category has been determined based on several data sources.

Economic and social consequences of human mobility restrictions under COVID-19

In response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, several national governments have applied lockdown restrictions to reduce the infection rate. Here we perform a massive analysis on near-real-time Italian mobility data provided by Facebook to investigate how lockdown strategies affect economic conditions of individuals and local governments. We model the change in mobility as an exogenous shock similar to a natural disaster. We identify two ways through which mobility restrictions affect Italian citizens.
